Anatomic pathology training 24 months includes autopsy pathology, general surgical pathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, pediatric and perinatal pathology, molecular pathology, electron microscopy, and forensic pathology. Clinical pathology training 24 months includes hematopathology, coagulation, transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, toxicology, analytical cytometry, image analysis, immunology, cytogenomics, molecular pathology, informatics, laboratory administration, and microbiology bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, mycobacteriology and virology.
Three first-year positions are available in a combined four-year anatomic and clinical pathology program. Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak campus, a tertiary-care facility with 1, in-patient beds, hosts 55 accredited residency and fellowship training programs with residents and fellows, and is the primary teaching facility for the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
It has one of the highest volumes in the country for annual hospital discharges 58, , surgeries 51, , emergency visits , and births 6, Over 91 medical and surgical specialties are represented on the medical staff. This provides a large volume of diverse material to both our clinical and anatomic pathology laboratories: Approximately 59, surgical cases annually and 93, cytology specimens, of which 5, are obtained from non-gynecologic sites.
The Beaumont Reference Laboratory handles over 11,, tests annually. We are located in the heart of southeast Michigan, which offers fine dining, a dynamic music and theater scene, major league sports teams and a revitalized riverfront and downtown area. Three positions are offered each year. The deadline for application is December 15th annually. Although a strong educational background is required, we do not impose strict cut-offs in terms of grades and scores when reviewing applications.
All interested candidates are encouraged to apply. Personal interviews are required and take place between November 1st and January 30th this next interview season. The small program size, coupled with the high volume of complex and diverse cases provides for a unique approach to resident education.
This affords for a more personalized approach with faculty allowing for optimal supervision, attention, and guidance. Our high volume affords the residents continuous exposure to a plethora of complex and challenging cases. Our high volume of community outreach material also ensures extensive exposure to biopsies an routine surgical cases as well. Our department also offers fellowship training in cytopathology, hematopathology, chemical pathology, and transfusion medicine. Fellows are responsible for signing out specimens, participating in weekly fine needle aspiration clinics, examining sentinel lymph nodes, preparing and interpreting sentinel lymph node scrapings, presenting at numerous inter-departmental conferences, performing frozen sections and teaching pathology residents.
