Lay several pieces in the second row. Begin the 3rd row with a full piece, the 4th row with a half piece, the 5th row with a full etc.
Continue this pattern throughout the installation process. Lay a piece on row 2, then a piece on row 3, then row 4 etc. This process helps eliminate excessive bending and kneeling. Pull each piece tight against the pieces before installing the next piece, avoiding gaps and overlaps. Install sod by sprinkler zones. As soon as a zone is completed. Turn the water on that zone.
I debated for months with myself between having the lawn and sprinklers put in or buying a new rototiller and doing it myself. While looking for sales of rototillers, I came upon the Rototiller Guy and the easy-to-use estimate creator tool on his web page. I liked the prices it showed, so I messaged Mike. He called me back and said he and his crew could do the job the next Tuesday, March 23, I asked how long it would take and he said they'd be done before they left that day.
So I said let's do it. On Tuesday, Mike and 3 other guys arrived promptly at 7am. They hand-picked the entire area, some square feet, rototilled it, raked out all the old irrigation pipes and sprinklers, grass, sod, and weeds and hauled it out.
Next, 3 yards of compost was spread over the area to be sodded and rototilled into the soil, and leveled. The sod was delivered to the street but it was too late to roll it out it was past 6. Mike and his crew came back the next morning at 7am and finished rolling out the sod. Mike suggested I put stabilized decomposed granite along the side of the house instead of trying to grow grass. I agreed and ordered 2 yard of stabilized DG as the supplier called it.
Make and 2 guys came back on Thursday and spread and tamped down the stabilized DG and we were done. Two weeks after the sod was installed, it is ready to mow. I've attached two photographs so you can see how well it is growing. Make sure that the finished, leveled soil is 1 inch below all the paved surfaces that surround it, leaving vertical room for the new sod.
The finished soil should be loose, not compacted, so it will be easy for the new roots to penetrate. Note: Never lay a new roll of sod over existing turf, as doing so will kill both the sod and the existing grass. Unroll the first roll of sod against the longest edge of surrounding landscaping or concrete, making sure the entire length makes contact with the soil below it.
Rake your footprints out of the next patch of dirt and unroll the next sod roll. You should stand on the bare soil, lay the sod in front of you, and back up as you go. If you stand on the newly laid sod, your body weight will cause the sod to shift, leaving gaps between the edges.
No problem! Simply fold back the excess and use a box cutter or other sharp knife to trim the sod. Water the newly laid sod twice a day until it takes root and bonds with the soil below it usually 2 to 6 weeks. After the first watering, pull back a corner of the newly laid sod. The original soil beneath it should be moist, but not muddy.
